Chi-town: A Photo Documentary

Two mini sagas

Write two fifty-word mini-sagas. The origins of the saga comes from Icelandic prose dating back to the 12th century when locals would recount their warrior battles. Today, a saga is referred to as a modern heroic narrative.
Your mini-saga should have 50 words. No more, no less. The stories must have a beginning, middle and end. They must be interesting, and they may not be autobiographical. Engage the reader. 

Randy, hippie, business student, never understood his place. He loved his planet more than his people. His passion for the earth grew with every step he took away from it. Randy took it upon himself to save the earth from pollution and rot. That is why brave, young Randy recycles.

At the party on the corner of shady and suspicion, Alex notices a strange interaction. He hears the word “no” being said frequently. He sees discomfort in the woman’s eyes. The man insists. Alex reacts in the only way logical. “Take a hint. If she says no leave her alone.”  

Collapsus

            For this creative project I watched and played the interactive story Collapsus. Collapsus is about energy crises that caused the government to shorthand its people and start a revolutionary movement for the entire world. My interactive experience was quite fun, I must say. At the beginning I was a little confused about why Tina Fey was talking to the camera, is she talking to me? About halfway through the story I finally realized that she was video logging to an audience online. This way of communication and reporting has become largely popular around the world and what a better time to do it than during a civil war (more views on YouTube). The story followed several different characters from around the world to fully capture the intensity that is the end of the world, as we know it. The interactive part involved listening in on private conversations, knocking over a guy tied to a chair, etc. I wasn’t extremely impressed with the interactions because they distracted me from the story more than they helped me follow it. But that might just be me; I haven’t taken my medication yet today. I was extremely impressed by the quality of the audio, though. During some of the scenes it was so clear that I felt like the voices were coming from the guy sitting next to me in the library.

            The story overall was amazing, I loved that video logging played a huge part in it. I think this helped show that this kind of thing can happen to us too because its such a modern way of reporting. And the actors did an incredible job of not being cheesy. I got worried for a little at the beginning that they might be. The reason I liked this interactive story so much is because it combined so many elements in media. It had animation, film, audio, and gaming. Collapsus is one of the most creative projects I’ve ever seen. I could tell that a lot of talented people worked on this while I was embarking on its exciting story.

What Really Happened in Peter Pan

            Wendy, John, George and Michael settle in to the warm comfort of their beds when a loud THUD breaks the silence. Wendy screams when she sees a dark figure come float up on the other side of their window. A magical man dressed in green comes out of the darkness and screams, “I am Peter Pan! Follow me if you want to live!” The children are stunned. “You may choose to go to one of the following places,” Peter said. “The first is Dreamland. Here you will become one with your imagination. The second is Wonderland. This is a place of knowledge and discovery; here you will find great joy in such things. The third is Neverland. This is where I live, it is indescribable but as you can see, I can fly. So you can only imagine what wonders are waiting for you there.”

            After much discussion, the children decide on Neverland. Peter agrees and hands each of them a pill of “fairy dust” which will give them the ability to fly. Soon after taking the pill, Wendy slowly starts to come off the ground, “I’m flying!” she proclaims. John, George and Michael get the same sensation as they’re feet leave the ground. Together, they all fly out the window and begin their journey to the wonderful Neverland!

            Peter talks about all the amazing features of Neverland on the way there. Suddenly, Wendy loses the sensation that she’s flying. Now she feels as if she had never left the ground. She wakes up and sees her feet sprawled out in front of her. George is lying right next to her. As she becomes aware of her surroundings she realizes that they’re in the back of a van. Peter Pan is driving the car. Wendy becomes frightened and yells for help. The car suddenly stops. Wendy hears footsteps coming around the vehicle. The trunk opens and Wendy is greeted with a rag bathed in chloroform.

            Neverland is the middle aged man’s (Peter Pan) basement.
